How a word is built
Most Arabic words grow from a root of three letters. The root ك ت ب k-t-b carries the idea “to write”.
A pattern puts the root into a word. Here it is فِعَال fiʿāl: the letters ف ع ل stand in for the three root letters, and the long ا ā is added between the second and third.
The same root gives other words:
- كَتَبَ kataba · he wrote
- كَاتِب kātib · writer
- مَكْتَب maktab · desk, office
